Introduction

This quick guide discusses the Portal Counting functionality available on the Irisys Vector units and how to configure it. A full understanding of the below settings is essential in order to ensure high accuracy that the Vector 4D devices are capable of.

In order to access these settings, you must first make an initial connection to the Vector unit; see separate guide: Irisys Vector 4D - Making a Setup Connection

Counting Settings

Once you are connected to your Vector, the Counting settings are accessed via the ‘Settings’ tab, then ‘Counting’:

If connected to a Vector via an Estate Manager connection, make sure you select the ‘Live View’ option to make changes

Portal Counting Basics

Enabling Portal counting involves adding a Portal Count Register. This will enable two associated zones (or portals) on the ground plane view.

Essentially, the Portal register will increment for every person who is tracked from the first ‘Start’ portal to the second ‘Stop’ portal. Specifically, a person must begin their journey as a tracked target within the first portal, and must end it at the second portal, to generate a count increment.

Importantly anyone simply walking through either zone will not be counted, nor will a person who starts in the ‘Stop’ zone and ends in the ‘Start’ zone.

There is no time limit in which to traverse from the first zone to the second. A person can take as long as they want/need, and as long as they are continually tracked - after starting in the Start zone - as long as they leave via the Stop zone, they will generate a count increment.

Instructions

Click the plus symbol (+) on the Register dialog window, then choose the ‘Portal’ register, click [Next]

Enter a name for the new zone register, click [Next]

Enter any options on Settings, click [Next],
then click [Add Register].

You can also configure a Height Filter, Staff Detection, and/or a Height Histogram at this point if required.

Configuring the Portals

Switch from Video Mode, to Line Edit Mode, in order configure the two zones associated with your portal counting register.

The zones are moved and shaped in the way to moving and shaping count lines - by clicking and dragging the various points. Additional ‘drag’ points can be created by clicking on the smaller circles in the middle of a straight-line segment. Drag points can also be deleted in order to simplify a portal shape, by holding down the CTRL key and clicking the mouse on that point.

When positioning and shaping the zones, remember that the Start zone must be positioned in an area where people are first seen as they enter the field of view, and the Stop zone must be positioned in an area where people are last seen as they leave the field of view.

Enabling the Vectors path map view will help you, as it clearly shows the tracks of everyone that has walked through the field of view, with lighter areas being the least walked parts and the darker areas being the most walked. Importantly it also shows the ‘initialisation areas’ on top of the tracks and these areas are where people enter the field of view. In most cases an initialisation area for people entering the field of view will also indicate where people going in the opposite direction will leave the field of view, and so are key to accurate positioning of both zones.

When positioning zones remember also that both the Start and Stop zones should be positioned only on the floor where people can physically stand/walk, and you should switch between the Line Edit mode and Video mode in order to do this.

Always watch the Video view and switch back and forth to Line Edit mode in order to fine tune the zone positions and shapes until you are happy with the configuration.
