Introduction
This quick guide discusses the functionality provided by the Summation Register type which is available on the Irisys Vector units. A full understanding of the below settings is essential in order to ensure high accuracy that the Vector 4D devices are capable of.
In order to access these settings, you must first make an initial connection to the Vector unit; see separate guide: Irisys Vector 4D - Making a Setup Connection
Counting Settings
Once you are connected to your Vector, the Counting settings are accessed via the ‘Settings’ tab, then ‘Counting’:
Summation Notes
This type of register uses between two and eight (max) other count registers, as part of its functionality. The register will add or subtract (as configured) each individual count register total from the Summation Registers total value.
Care should obviously be taken to ensure that the registers used are themselves configured correctly, especially when using the subtract function, as it is possible to go into negative values in some cases.
It should be noted that the summation registers addition and subtraction functions can be done externally within your data collection software as an alternative to adding more registers to the device itself.
Summation Usage
Example 1: Total IN and OUT Counts
If you have one 'IN' line and one 'OUT' line, adding a summation register will allow the total combined counts of IN plus OUT to be captured.
Example 2: Total IN counts from Customer and Staff
If you are using the Irisys staff detection lanyard to count customers and staff separately in two registers, adding a summation register will allow the total combined IN count of staff and customers to be captured. A second summation register will do the same for total OUTs if required.
Example 3: Total IN counts from Adults and Children
If you are using separate registers for counting adults and children based on height filtering, adding a summation register will allow the total combined adult and child counts to be captured.
Example 4: Separating Staff from a total of all counts.
If you have a total counts register and a staff only register, then using the Summation registers subtraction function will provide a separate count of all non staff. This is basically an alternative method of providing Staff, non-staff and total counts, using a subtraction rather than an addition (example 2 above).
Example 5: Very basic Occupancy.
If you use a summation register to subtract total OUT from total IN, a limited and very basic number of people left in the area will be provided. Note that this is not recommended and the separate dedicated 'Occupancy' register should be used instead. See also Issues with Occupancy Counting.
Instructions
To add a Summation register, click the ‘Add’ button on the counts dialog box, scroll down to the Summation register, click to highlight it and then click 'Next'.
Give the new register a valid and sensible name:
Now click the registers that you want to use as part of the summation register total, click Next when done:
Finally, check the settings made and Click the 'Add Register' button to finalise it:
The new register will be added to the bottom of the Registers dialog list:
In this case a corresponding 'Total OUT' summation register may also be required.
