Introduction

This quick guide discusses the Staff Detection functionality, available on the Irisys Vector 4D devices, and how to configure it. A full understanding of the settings below is essential to ensure high accuracy that the Vector 4D devices are capable of.

In order to access these settings, you must first make an initial connection to the Vector unit; see separate guide: Irisys Vector 4D - Making a Setup Connection.

Counting Settings

Once you are connected to your Vector, the Register settings are accessed via the ‘Settings’ tab, then ‘Counting’.

On the 'Registers' dialog window each register has its own settings that can be changed independently, simply by  clicking the Edit symbol, shown here. If the Registers window is not shown click the Registers button first:

The ‘Edit Registers’ dialog will then open.

If connected to a Vector via an Estate Manager connection, make sure you select the ‘Live View’ option to make changes

Staff Detection Basics

Staff are identified by the Irisys lanyards which must be worn around the neck of each staff member. These lanyards are made of a specific and distinctive material which the Vector devices can detect. Note that Lanyards sourced from other manufacturers are not guaranteed to be detected and are not supported.

When staff detection has been enabled - and the Vector 4D detects a staff member who is wearing an Irisys lanyard - they will be displayed as a red target within the field of view.
Note that until the lanyard is detected by the Vector a staff member may be initially shown as a yellow target.

Staff detection works in conjunction with any of the count line crossing or zone registers. In this way each one can be configured to count or ignore staff members, as required.

When employing staff detection, this means that a register will only increment when both:
• A person crosses the corresponding count line (or enters the corresponding zone)
•    That person also adheres to the Staff Detection mode setting

The staff detection functionality included in Vector 4D provides three different modes:
• Off – The Vector counts everyone
• Exclude Staff – Identified staff members do not generate a count increment
• Staff Only – Increments a register only when a staff member is identified

Configuration

To enable the Staff Detection functionality, go to the settings for the relevant register and click the Staff Detection tab:

From the drop-down menu, choose the appropriate Detection mode.

When using Staff Detection in conjunction with line crossing counting, Irisys recommend using the ‘Deferred Count Mode’– accessed from the ‘Count Mode’ tab.

Remember to click the Save button before closing the dialog window.

Notes

Because it can sometimes take a few steps until the staff member is fully inside the active part of the field of view, and the lanyard can then be seen by the Vector; it is recommended to use Deferred count mode. In this mode, anyone who crosses a line as non-staff, but who is then subsequently recognised as a staff member, will generate the correct staff increment when they leave the field of view. Lines set to use ‘Immediate’ count mode - by their very nature - will increment based on identification (or not) at the time of crossing the line.

Using ‘Immediate’ count mode with staff detection is not recommended, but if employed, care should be taken to ensure lines are positioned so that staff are detected correctly before crossing them.

Validation

When validating the staff detection functionality, remember that the validator must be able to see the staff lanyard for themselves, and in some cases, this may be very difficult. It is recommended that Staff Detection is temporarily switched off whilst validating and re-enabled only once the overall accuracy has been established and accepted.

Alternatively, two lines positioned on top of each, in the same place in the field of view (and counting in the same direction), can be utilised - with one line configured to count everyone and the other line configured to count staff only (or non-staff only). This could be configured permanently or as a temporary measure for ease of validating only.
Don’t forget that it is also possible to exclude staff AND enable height filtering if required. See the separate section, Register Height Filtering for more details.
