27th April 2023 - "DCOM Hardening"
According to the Microsoft website the topic KB5004442 was being implemented in phases as described below:
The first phase of DCOM updates was released on June 8, 2021. In that update, DCOM hardening was disabled by default. You can enable them by modifying the registry as described in the “Registry setting to enable or disable the hardening changes” section below. The second phase of DCOM updates was released on June 14, 2022. That changed the hardening to enabled by default but retained the ability to disable the changes using registry key settings. The final phase of DCOM updates will be released in March 2023. It will keep the DCOM hardening enabled and remove the ability to disable it.
Fluke Process Instruments ceased providing any updates to the CS210 software many months before Microsoft's implementation of this DCOM security hardening initiative.
As we have moved from CS210 to CS400 at the end of 2021, we are not able to provide a CS210 software revision that is in compliance with Microsoft's DCOM update.
If the customer requires compliance with the current Microsoft update for DCOM, then use of the OPC feature within CS210 will produce the DCOM error message with no ability for resolution.
Alternative Options
Upgrade to CS400 software that offers OPC UA and has no requirement to define DCOM settings.
Retain CS210 and purchase OPC "tunneling" software - this bypasses the need to configure DCOM settings and offers other advantages like autorecovery.
Conclusion
CS400 offers the best solution in terms of value, features and forwards compatibility. There are many advantages to this new software CS400 Link
Please be aware that Microsoft also ceased support for MS SQL 2008 R2 in 2019. This SQL server is used by CS210 for data archiving. CS400 does not use an SQL server for storing of images and is not reliant on Microsoft for the SQL server used for the reporting function. This further supports the advantage in upgrading to CS400.
