Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

In the UK, the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment recycling (WEEE) regulations were introduced in 2006 and became law in 2013, which in turn was expanded to cover more products in 2019.

The purpose of the WEEE regulations is to prevent products unnecessarily going to landfill. It covers:

  • Large household appliances - eg fridges, cookers, microwaves, washing machines and dishwashers
  • Small household appliances – eg vacuum cleaners, irons, toasters and clocks
  • IT and telecommunications equipment – eg personal computers, copying equipment, telephones and pocket calculators
  • Consumer equipment – eg radios, televisions, hi-fi equipment, camcorders and musical instruments
  • Lighting equipment – eg straight and compact fluorescent tubes and high intensity discharge lamps
  • Electrical and electronic tools – eg drills, saws and sewing machines, electric lawnmowers
  • Toys, leisure and sports equipment – eg electric trains, games consoles and running machines
  • Medical devices – eg (non infected) dialysis machines, analysers, medical freezers and cardiology equipment
  • Monitoring and control equipment - eg smoke detectors, thermostats and heating regulators
  • Automatic dispensers – eg hot drinks dispensers and money dispensers

Such items contain a wide variety of materials, eg an average TV contains 6% metal and 50% glass, whereas a cooker is 89% metal and only 6% glass. Other materials found include plastics, ceramics and precious metals.

Like the vast majority of electrical and electronic devices, Irisys devices should not be sent to landfill.

Irisys Responsibilities

As part of the WEEE regulations, Irisys are responsible for providing a free 'take back' service for the devices we sell, once they reach the end of their working life. We will then strip down, recycle and dispose of the various parts in an environmentally responsible way.

You can make use of this service by returning devices to us via the Irisys RMA procedure. The RMA procedure is intended to assist with partners returning devices that are still in warranty to be repaired/replaced, but any devices which are replaced with new ones will be recycled, and so too will any devices returned which are subsequently found to not be covered by warranty.

If you have old Irisys devices they should be separated from other waste and never sent to landfill. Instead, contact Irisys support and we will start the RMA process which will enable you to send back your old devices to us.

Note that all Irisys devices have the crossed out wheelie bin symbol somewhere on the label. Anything with that symbol must not be disposed of with regular waste. Doing so will cause environmental damage.
